This book reminds me of Where The Heart Is... a little corny, with characters you can't help but like, and a story line that just carries the reader away. Like the rest of Landvik's books, the characters are quirky and the plot moves in unexpected directions. Have tissues on hand before the ending!

Wonderful story of Violet Mathers and her wonderful life. Starting out in the Depression with a horrible family and horrible accident Violet's life takes many interesting turns. This book pulled me in even though i initially thought I wouldn't like it.

I was truly moved by Violet's story. Landvik intertwines import issues with a story of love and life.

I have read all of Lorna Landvik's books, and this one, like the others, is wonderful. A bit sadder than the others, but with a lovely ending. She has a way of creating characters that feel like someone you could know... and she paints such a great atmosphere that you can imagine you are there!
It's the story of Violet, an unattractive girl who suffers even more after a freak accident- and how a chain of events lead her to become a strong, wonderful, confident woman.

You will love it!!

Another story from Lorna Landvik with quirky characters overcoming misfortune and flurishing in unusual circumstances.

I didn't like this as much as "Angry Housewives", but it's still a good read.

This book has a cast of characters whose travails and triumphs you'll long remember. It is a tale of love and hope, bigotry and betrayal, loss and discovery---as Violet, who's always considered herself a minor character in her own life story, emerges as a heroine you'll laugh wiuth, cry with, and, most important, cheer for all the way.

This book contained diverse and interesting characters, but even more I was drawn in by the fact that it did not follow the standard "formula" of women's literature. These characters had much to overcome and I felt that this book highlighted the strength we can find in unexpected places. The story is set during the Depression, but does not have the typical feel of historical fiction, yet you get a strong sense of how the time setting has a huge impact on the characters' lives. Very interesting read.

A nicely written heartwarming story. Slow at times in the beginning, middle, and moved too fast in the end, but worth reading.

why has this not been made into a movie,?! Seriously,a little bit, "That Thing You Do" and "To Kill A Mockingbird", I couldn't stop reading this book. I Love the characters and the relationships that make this a must read.

Main character is Violet Mathers. Bad luck seems to follow her. She decides to end it all, but turns along the way, show her that, that will not be possible as she finds reason to love life. Exciting good read

A sensitive and somewhat sad story of Violet Mathers, an 18-year-old woman, who grew up in rural Kentucky during the depression.

I am convinced that at birth the cake is already baked. Nurture is the nuts or frosting, but if youre a spice cake, youre a spice cake, and nothing is going to change you into an angel food.

Tall, slender Violet Mathers is growing up in the Great Depression, which could just as well define her state of mind. Abandoned by her mother as a child, mistreated by her father, and teased by her schoolmates (Hey, Olive Oyl, wheres Popeye?), the lonely girl finds solace in artistic pursuits. Only when shes hired by the towns sole feminist to work the night shift in the local thread factory does Violet come into her name, and bloom. Accepted by her co-workers, the teenager enters the happiest phase of her life, until a terrible accident causes her to retreat once again into her lonely shell.

Realizing that she has only one clear choice, Violet boards a bus heading west to California. But when the bus crashes in North Dakota, it seems that Fate is having another cruel laugh at Violets expense. This time though, Violet laughs back. She and her fellow passengers are rescued by two men: Austin Sykes, whom Violet is certain is the blackest man to ever set foot on the North Dakota prairie, and Kjel Hedstrom, who inspires feelings Violet never before has felt. Kjel and Austin are musicians whose sound is like no other, and with pluck, verve, and wit, Violet becomes part of their quest to make a new kind of music together.

Oh My Stars is Lorna Landviks most ambitious novel yet, with a cast of characters whose travails and triumphs youll long remember. It is a tale of love and hope, bigotry and betrayal, loss and discoveryas Violet, whos always considered herself a minor character in her own life story, emerges as a heroine youll laugh with, cry with, and, most important, cheer for all the way.
