I have an old book about WWI published about 1972, it has no ISBN. So when did publishers start using ISBNs? I didn't realize it was so recent.

I think the book is part of a series by Ballantine Books.

ISBNs were not used till the mid seventies and they were widely used then.

You should check out the help center its got a wealth of information and its fully searchable by keyword and FAQ :)

And when ISBNs first came into use there didn't seem to be any standard about where on the book they would be found.  So if you have a book from the 1970s you may have to look in several places before you find an ISBN.
