Gene Hill was out on the Wyoming range, building a holding pen for the Redboot ranch, when his brother, Zeke, showed up out of the blue. They had not seen each other since Zeke left suddenly three years earlier because of some trouble with another Redboot hand. He had locked horns with Charlie Bickford over a girl. While Gene had been settling into life and beginning to plan for the future, his footloose brother had been drifting from place to place, eventually making his way to Texas. Gene envied his brother's daring, carefree manner: Zeke never seemed to worry about anything, always trusting his skillfulness or his good luck to land on his feet. But as happy as Gene was to see him, he questioned whether it was wise for Zeke to return. After all, Charlie Bickford was still there, and as ornery as a bull. And Zeke was still Zeke.....
