A slim book - 182 pages with print a bit larger than usual and lots of white space. Probably written for the Juvenile market, but an entertaining and satisfying read for an adult. Might have gotten boring for me if not for the excellent writing skills of Ms. McCaffrey and the brevity of the book. A fantasy novel with princes and princesses, castles with hidden passageways, and maybe a little magic. Read it all in one evening.

A cute little story in novella length, it is the coming-of-age tale of Prince Jamas of Esphania. His beloved regent Mangan has just passed away, but Mangan has secretly made arrangements to ensure that the prince continues to have guidance and protection after his death, in the persona of Niffy the cat. And he will need this guidance when his hold on the throne is threatened by a neighboring kingdom.
