I have tried her a few times now and I just can't get into her writing style. I picked up The Royal Pain last night at the FOL sale rack. It was unpostable but only .25 so I said why not knowing I can put it in the Damaged Books box. Now I haven't read the 1st book in that series so I expected to have some parts with references to the previous book that I might not get. But that wasn't the problem. I don't know I just don't like her style. It's like several characters will be having a conversation and she doesn't mark who said what. So then I have no idea of who is talking and it gets confusing. This is probablly the 3rd or 4th book of hers that I've tried to read and just can't. |

You know, Mary, I have to agree with you. It's slow and hard to follow; not enough to hold my interest. |

Frankly, I don't think she is a very skilled writer. I do read some of hers (the werewolfs) as she can be funny. But too many of her lead women are twits. And too many grammar type mistakes to keep me comfortable. (And she is now also writing YA. Agh.) |

I liked her Betsy books but I agree that she can be hard to follow at times, more so than anyone else I'd read lately. Despite that, I did read four of her books back to back (which I rarely do with an author) so something about them was keeping me entertained. |

I read one of her books - can't remember the title - I think it was put into my pile of books at my bookseller by mistake, paid for it so figured I might as well read it. It was o.k. but not interesting enough to make me get any others of hers. |

Not alone there Mary. |

Not crazy about her Betsy books either, though someone did give me one of the Royal books that was funny in a way, not the best but I did chuckle some. Funny in the way of Sandra Hill's Vikings somewhat, roll your eyes but still laugh at the absurdity. |

Some of her werewolf stuff is good, otherwise nada. Some of the MJD says about readers...is best left unrepeated.
For funny, I prefer Jennifer Rardin, Shelly Laurenston, or Jeaniene Frost. Last Edited on: 2/19/09 1:13 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

I think she is an acquired taste. She's very simplistic. If you go into the books knowing you're going to get simple, almost dummied down plot, writing style etc ... then it's not so bad. I actually like her books but will not read them if I'm not in the mood for real simple. For some reason I think her Betsy books aren't written quite as simplistically as say Fred so she can adjust her writing style if she wants. |

I am finding her Undead series perfect potty books. I have all of them and plan to list them as I read, though. They are definitely not keepers. I was looking for something with humor after the Sookie series. |

There is something odd about her humor. It's like she is writing a satire about her main characters and at the same time as she thinks you should really like her main characters. It's not nasty or mean but self deprecating. Very odd.
