Today I got an empty envelope.  What should I do?

You could report it as lost in the mail; that way you won't lose your credit.

Another way  would be to mark it received with a problem but I'm not sure what they'd do with your credit.

Lastly, find Bernie's name at the top of the Bazaar post and email her your question.

I've had this same iccident happen to me before. I personaly reported received with a problem and I was able to keep my credit. You might also want to try sending the member a message explaining what you found. This problem might have something to do with the postal service it was sent through.

Good luck,

Dancegirl

I once requested 6 books in a "BOB" deal.  When they arrived, the package was open and only contained 3 books.  I PMed the sender and she sent me 3 other books to make it right.  She hadn't wrapped the books very well, only in printer paper for 6 books.  I didn't get 3 of the books that I had originally ordered, but I did get 6 books from her.

You could try and send a message the sender, tell her the problem, to see if she will do anything about it.  If she doesn't, then try to get your credit back through the system.

Stupid question, I know but did it look like there had been books in the package? If so, and there aren't books in it now, the books would have been literally lost in the mail.

I would tend to mark it as lost in the mail because the only time I reported there being a problem with a book (different circumstance, didn't meet requestor or PBS conditions), the system still mark it as received, kept my credit, gave the other member their credit for mailing it, (despite the condition) and then the other member wouldn't refund my credit. Result being, I was out a credit.

Also send the member a PM explaining how you received the package.

Here is the info you need, from the Help Center:

I received an empty wrapper--no book inside!

If this is a book you requested, you should not mark the book received, since you did not get the book.  You should contact the sender to let him or her know what happened.

  • The sender should call 800-ASK-USPS or go to http://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MLNtRcvd.aspx  and input the information online there. This will help USPS try to recover the book.

    • The form is titled "mail Theft"; this does not mean that you can use it only if you think the book was stolen.  "Received without contents" is an option on the page.
    • The choice to make under "Class" on the form if Media Mail was used is "Parcel Post".
  • If you think that the Wrapping method may have contributed to the loss of the book, please do give (gentle) feedback to the sender; you can refer to All Help documents about bookwrapping if you like.

  • If you have marked the book received by mistake (or if the system marked the book received for you while you were absent from PBS), you can also discuss this with the sender, who got credit when that happened. See How do I contact another member? for instructions on how to contact a sender from the transaction in your Transaction Archive.

If you have not marked the book received yet, do not do so.  You will continue to get the usual auto-emails from PBS asking if the book has arrived; open and read them, and follow any instructions within.

If the book hasn't arrived by the 26th day after it was marked mailed, then PBS will declare it lost in the Mail and you will get your credit back.  If the book does arrive after that, you should mark it received from your Transaction Archive.

I PM'd Bernie and sender.  We'll see what happens.

Thanks

This situation is very clearly spelled out in the Help Center docs as copied by Valli above. If you receive an empty envelope you do not mark it as received (you haven't received the books!).  It being a deal doesn't change how you handle it in the system.
