Hey everybody,

I ordered a book from a member that had this Requester Condition I will not accept ex-library books or books that are not new looking. But I will post them.  And me being the noisy person I am I looked at their profile to do a little more investigating. And this is what I found. I will not accept ex-library books or books they are not new looking. But  I do post and send out ex-library books. So my question is have you ever ordered or received a book that the member  you ordered it from wouldn't be willing to accept themselves? Just want to see if there are others who have seen wacky RC's like this.

I myself have no problem with ex-library books as long as they are in good condition. So this is not a problem. And no I am not complaining about the book I ordered. I just think its funny/strange and sometimes odd that members would post books/send books in a condition that they would not accept themselves.

To clarify I am the one who ordered the book from another member who had these rc conditions on their profile.

I can't say it's happened to me. But in many cases, how would you know? Why would it matter? It's not being hypocritical, we have no way of knowing why they want it and they can ask for anything they want. So a smoker only wanting smoke-free books, or a person wanting dust covers but only has paperbacks could both happen. In your example it could be they are ordering a specific book to keep so they don't want a library copy, but they have them to swap. A smoker may want to give a copy to a friend but needs a cleaner copy. Or a no pet RC, maybe a cat owner has a jealous pet that won't tolerate smells of other animals (I know my cats sometimes suspiciously sniff books I've received).

Well, for ex-library books. Specifically, they can range in condition from looking brand-new to looking like 100 people have read that copy. It could be that that member is OK with ex-library books in general but prefers them to be in better condition so she likes to pick them out herself, instead of gettingthem from other members who may have lower standards. I don't have a RC about ex-lib books, but I've seen some really beat up stuff that still might be technically postable. So I can see why someone might like to pick and choose among ex-lib books.

Just want to see if there are others who have seen wacky RC's like this.

I don't think it's wacky, or all that unexpected.

Lot's of us pick up books we don't intend to read or keep, but we know that it's postable at PBS and someone may want it. It puts more books into the system, and earns credits, so why not?

The idea here is to post books you don't want, for those you do. Makes sense you'd post books others may want, but you don't.

Actually perfectly understandable to me--I agree with Sara.  I personally don't have any problems with ex-library books as long as they are postable.  But, I have received some that are in great shape and others that are pretty bad, but could technically be still postable.  One thing I notice about a lot of the ex-library books I read is that they have stains (probably food) somewhere inside the book--which would make the book unpostable. I don't have an RC against ex-library books, but I've thought of putting one in place just to avoid the problematic books.  On the other hand, I do buy ex-library books from Friends of the Library book stores--but I have the ability to check these out before hand, so I know what condition they are in before buying, and I'm comfortable posting them here because I know they are in postable condition.

The only thing I find odd about the RC "I will not accept ex-library books or books they are not new looking. But  I do post and send out ex-library books" is that they bothered to add the second sentence. What they post/send out themselves is of no relevance to someone requesting a book from them.

I have seen many people say they get books at library book sales specifically to post.

There are tons of places to get books. FOL, garage sales, Freecyle, used book stores, friends.

They can pick them up to trade here, or pick them up to read and pass along. It may be that only in their keeper shelfs they want to better ones.

As someone else pointed out, what you pick up to trade says nothing about what you do keep.

Remember, we are all here trading books we DON'T want. All of us.

I maybe wouldn't put an explicit explanation of why I want and don't want certain books in my profile ... because it causes other members to question things .... but we are all here trading books we don't want, for ones we do. It's just that most of the time, you will not know why someone doesn't want the book they are offering.

Also they could have received these ex-library books before they had the RC. Or they could have received them from people disregarding their RCs.

But why does it even matter?  I could care less what RC someone I am requesting a book from has. It has nothing to do with me as a book requestor.  It's none of my business why they have the RC they do when I am not sending them a book. (really the "why" of an rc is none of my business as a sender either, I just decline if I don't like it).
