God loved us and fent his Son to VII. the Propitiation for our Sins, and that every true Chriftian is born of God, Chap. v. j, 4. i. e. as other Verfes of this holy Writer in his Gofpel explain it, he is born of the Spirit of God, Jobn. 13, and iii. 5, 6. It appears then that the Errors of fuch whom the Apoftle would here exclude from our Friendfhip, are fuch as do not acknowledge "Jefus Chrift to be the Meffiah, or not to be a propitiatory Sacrifice for the Sins of Men., nor allow that every true Chriftian is regenerated and born of God, or of his Spirit i. e. by the powerful, renewing and fandifying Influences thereof as other Scriptures explain it, particularly John i. 12, 13. John iii. 3, 5. and as St. Paul exprefies it, Eph. i. 19, 20. By fuch a mighty Power which he wrought in Chrift when he raifed him from the Dead. Again, I would aflt Momus, why are the Names of Cbrift and the Holy 'Spirit appointed fo generally to be ufed in Baptifm, which is the Ordinance which initiates us into Chriftianity? Is it not to put us in Mind that when we profefs Chriftianity we profefs the chief Articles that relate to him as our Saviour, (viz.) Jefus Chriji to be the Propitiation for our Sins, we profefs to be bom of the Spirit, or regenerated and renewed to Holinefs by t...« less
