Gail Desmond is alone and working as a companion to a very rich matron when the ship they are on starts to sink. Gail is almost left behind when a young man risks his life to save her. They are washed ashore and rescued by an elderly lady and her maid. What follows is their recovery and Gail's "escape" to earn money to repay her debt. Grace Livingston Hill is my favorite author. This is not my favorite book but it is still wholesome and entertaining.
