I just got two books reurned to me for postage due. I can't figure out why. Book 1: Printed mailing wrapper (Media Mail plainly on label) with a cost of $2.41. I used 2 $1 "Wisdom" stamps and 1 "Liberty Bell" Forever stamp...thinking this was worth $2.44 in postage easily covering the $2.41 due. Book 2: Printed mailing wrapper (First Class plainly on label) with a cost of $2.39 due. Again I used 2 Wisdom stamps and 1 Forever stamp....thinking the postage was well covered. I get books back saying I owe 21 cents on Book 1 and 19 cents on book 2. ??????? The postage amounts were even handwritten on both packages (same costs as PBS calculated)...so someone actually looked at them. I can't figure this out. Am I crazy or is my PO? Is there a 20 cent stamp that looks like a Bell that they got confused about?

I think you should take these into the Post Office and discuss with the people at the counter. |

Of course. But I have been trying to anticipate what I might have done wrong before I talk to them. I can't think of anything I possibly could have done wrong. It just seems like such an idiotic error. The Forever stamps were dated 2009, but I can't see how that matters. It's not easy for me to get to the PO Monday. I'm tempted to put them back in the mailbox and try again. (The box is distant from the house back a long drive so it's not like I can talk it over with the carrier). It's kind of getting me more and more annoyed the longer I think about it. It seems the best outcome for me is to catch her in a blatant mistake and have them realize they screwed up and 'owe me' a favor or two. But that probably means talking to someone besides the carrier at the PO.

Did you have delivery confirmation on them? DC costs 19 cents IIRC? just an idea |

That looks like a staff error to me also Mike, only way to know is to just take it to the PO and ask. Not the carrier, but at the minimum a counter clerk (and may the postmaster if the problem isn't quickly resolved). And you should be correct, that was the point to Forever stamps ... regardless of the purchase date they are valued at the current First Class postal rate (44 cents). No optional services requested. Just stamps. I've got more dollar and forever stamps to use in the same manner. What's odd is that with media mail, even if the book weighed too much, the next step is $2.82. Doesn't work out at all if they say I need 21 cents more. Check out this old thread for some insight: http://www.paperbackswap.com/FOREVER-STAMPS-ONLY-FOR-MAIL/topic/116922/

Took them back to the PO today. She had no idea what was wrong with the book's initial postage and no qualms about the Forever stamps that were on there. Everything I've read the past few days indicates the Forever stamps are 100% useable for Media Mail and any other non-bulk rate items. (I read NON-bulk to mean a rate based upon just one package..and not many packages, like a mass mailing).

I use Forever stamps on MM all the time. They are good for the current First Class mail rate, no matter what you paid for them. |

Mike, I'm curious -- when the clerk acknowledged that your "forever stamps" were indeed correct, did she re-send the books at no extra cost to you? |

hmmm and the current 20 cent add--on stamp has George Washington on it. |
