I was wondering since it's not really covered in the condition points for sending books... but you know how when you buy the inexpensive Romance PBs and they offset the cost sometimes by advertising with those post cards in the middle? Do those need to be intact to offer a book to swap? I rather hate the things and gleefully rip them out any time I get a book with them. Although I save a sliver to use as a bookmark sometimes. I wasn't sure if it would fall into that "it's ok" category like HB dust jackets.

+ Thanks!

Not sure, but I would think it would be alright to tear them out as they are not an intrinsic part of the book.  It's just advertising and removing them doesn't harm the book in any way.

But that is just my opinion...

I think so too but I don't want a nasty-gram back. Cause you know someone out there is going to botch the whole firm rip process and another gets a frazzled page and it's a mess then.

I wonder, too, if they would negate the media mail rate b/c it's advertising. Just a thought....

It is completely postable with those advertising missing. Those are not text pages and are not needed for the book to be considered postable. As long as you are not injuring the spine when they are removed, it is not an issue.

They do not negate media mail. Advertising other books is allowed in media mail.

Do they have expiration dates on them?   If they do, some of them would be outdated anyway.   I always rip out cards from books, magazines, etc.  They never have anything to do with the book.

Well I've stopped ripping them out since I joined PBS.  But that's more because I'm worried about damaging the spine since it's mostly older books that have these nowadays.  But I have posted ones before that had them torn out and never had a complaint.

The ones I've wondered about are the ones that have a cut out coupon in them.  Where instead of the removable cards they have a page bound in with a cut out coupon inside.

As long as you don't damage the book when you rip them out, the book is postable.  But I wonder, also, if they technically qualify for Media Mail with the advertising intact.  I'm sure that the PO would never catch it, but it still makes me wonder.  Personally I hate the things and really object to being advertised when I paid good money for a book.  It's like I object to advertisements before a movie at the theatre after I have paid over $8.00 for a ticket!

My least favorite form of advertising is written on somebody's ...tush.  I may be somewhat anal (remove brand labels from jeans), but do we really need kids and adults running around with advertising on their behinds?

The media mail regulations from USPS clearly states that such cards advertising other books are completely legal for media mail.  It is easy enough to find if you go to USPS.com.

edited to add:  this is the exact wording from USPS "Media Mail can not contain advertising except for incidental announcements of books"

I was actually going to ask this question myself here soon!

I hate those things and ripped them out of a couple books that I'd like to post eventually. It is obvious something was torn out because I couldn't get it to come out cleanly. So technically there are torn pages, but it's advertisement and not actual text pages.

Sounds like the consensus is that it's ok. And I don't see how it'd mar the media mail dictate. I mean it's part of the book. They don't say anything about the excerpts in the back of books "advertising" other books so a postcard in the middle should be ok. Just don't like them.

no

Thanks. I wasn't going to tear the whole page out ( don't want to damage spine) but just cut the coupon portion.
