I'm planning to try again this year......haven't been successful even once yet, but I keep trying!!  LOL  I'm lonelyfilly over there too..........haven't decided what to write about this year, but think I'm going to incorporate some of the madness I've been dealing with the last 3 months into it somehow........

I hate myself enough to try again this year. I failed miserably last year. I realized that grad school and NaNo don't make the best combination, but obviously that line of thinking didn't stick around.

My NaNo username is sharp_teeth

I've never done it nor known personally someone who has.  Heck, I don't think I even know anyone else in real life who knows what Nanowrimo is!  I've been intrigued by the concept for years, but this is the first year I have an itch to try it.

Will I hate myself if I try and fail?

Or will I hate myself more if I don't even try?

Comments and sincere encouragement and/or discouragement welcome.

Robin- HI! Having talked around 20 other people into doing NaNo over the years (fine one of them found themselves signed up by me but she had commitment issues)
The ONLY way you can fail NaNO is to not try. 50,000 words is the goal BUT many others set their own. Say you've never reached 20,000 words before, then you can set that as your personal goal. Sure you wont get the nifty winners bar on your profile but you can add to your profile saying that was your goal.
I had never met anyone else who had won NaNO, I knew an online friend (barely a friend) who had tried the year before and asked me to do it with her.
So I joined up, logged in to find I had a local group of writers who would meet up at a cafe, write together and help. This was such a huge thing for me, I hate crowds, strangers and forced myself to go that first night. NEVER have regretted it.
I at the time had no friends who wrote, had to find ppl online who shared ideas with me. I did not even think of myself as a writer, had all these quirks that I thought meant I was insane. NOPE! They were very similar..LOL

NaNO is an experience beyond writing the words.

ONE THING that pisses me off is those who say "you cannot write a novel in a month, it wont be>>>>>" Sure but the idea of NaNO is to write a draft story, get your idea onto paper and work on it, make it happen.

Make sure to see if you have a local group, under My NaNOwrimo go to Set my Home region,  choose the area closest to you (could be city or county) and this will give you acess to the forum of ppl nearby. If they have write ins, attend at least one of them, see who is around and could help you.

Yup I love my NaNO, I buy hubby a new video game at the start of november, keeps him busy and happy and lets me write.

Oh yeah, I'm doing NaNoWriMo... IT'S CALLED MY ENGLISH MAJOR THESIS.

I only discovered NaNo when I entered college and, unfortunately, my college classes keep me busy enough that I have little to no time for personal writing. I tried in my Sophomore year but didn't get any further than the ten pages I did on November 1st. Perhaps I will have better luck when I am free from college.

Good luck to those who are giving it a shot this year! Happy writing!

I  recommend "No Plot No Problem' which is the bible of nanowrimo.   Right up front it tells you a large part of what you write will be crap, but some how you can find gems among it that fit in with the story.   I came down to the last day and pulled it off.  My family all thought I was nuts, but I enjoyed the heck out of the accomplisment.   I'm going to try this year again, not sure I'll pull it off as my idea is pretty flimsy, but what have I got to loose?

Robin, you should definitely go for it! Even the years I didn't win, I had loads of fun. I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with a plot this year. Hmmm

Go for it Robin!

I usually do JulNoWriMo (since I only teach one class in the Summer), but  I've signed up for NaNoWrimo and I'm really looking forward to it. I may crash and burn, but I've gotta try.

Anyway, I've done quite a bit of prep work, but recently I'm wondering if I should switch it from a YA to an Adult book.  Ughh...just 3 more weeks to figure it out.

And FYI if you are not used to typing 17,000 words in 2.5 days your hands WILL hurt..LOL

Okay, I'm being my usual techno-lame here.  I can get to my buddy page, and see some of you have named me as buddies, but either I can't find a button to add, or some of you haven't registered yet.    Any ideas?

I am looking forward to/dreading November.

I think your own buddy page only lists those that you've named as buddies. To add more go to the profile page of the person you want to add. Just beneath their picture is the 'add as buddy' link. All you need to do is click it and that person will appear as one of your buddies on your buddy page. You can click on other's buddy page to see if you're already there. Hope that helps.

If they are on your buddy page, then they are already your buddy.. you can search (top right on the screen) for authors and add them that way.

Somehow I always forget this is coming up. . . I think this is the earliest I've realized that it's getting close to November. ;)

I had an epic fail last year, but I still wrote more that month than ever before, so I'm planning on participating again. Luckily I have a fantasy story that I've done some planning on already but haven't started writing, so I'm going to spend the rest of this month frantically trying to flesh out the world and come up with a plot outline (never done one of those before, but maybe it'll help) and then I'll be logging word counts with all of you.

I'm PhoenixFalls over there too, so anyone who wants to can add me.

I read an interesting post on the NaNo forums about a word count goal plan and I think I'm going to try it. I always start the month out with a bang and my excitement dwindles by the 2nd week. This plan is to write over 3000 words the first day and then each day the word count goes down. The word count goal for November 30 is 1 word.

Here's the thread if anyone is interested:  http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3713203

Plotwise, I'm still struggling. I've already found and abandoned 3 plots.

For the first time I stuck around the NaNo forums all year since last November. It proved interesting to see who the die-hards are who can't let it go after November----guess I've become one of them----plus it really helped with revising and editing, lots of motivation there.

I've signed up for 2 years both years, something happened - getting sick, family issues - right at the beginning of the month that caused so many issues and took up so much time, that any NaNo attempt was just shelved.

I've signed up again this year.. let's hope I have better luck this time.

Jackie- I think its some curse because every year, my computer stops working, I get sick or I get hurt. Last year topped it all when I fell over on my way to the first write in on Nov 1st. I was in constant pain the whole month with a strained left knee and sprained right ankle. This year I hope to just have a small cold or upset stomach..LOL I;ve already managed to loose my USB drive.
