The only reason I'd say it was worth reading is its unique perspective as a memoir written by a man who was born legally blind and whose vision gets progressively worse. I don't find his style interesting--his writing is too dry and humorless, he's not very likeable, and I don't understand all the rave reviews on Amazon. (I mean, they're calling this guy "an American treasure." ahem.) That said, i like to read just to learn about something new sometimes.

Author's childhood was spent trying to fit in as someone who happened to be "near-sighted" - truth is he's been legally blind since the time he started school. Getting to the "liberation" scene of him going out for the first time with Corky, not having to worry about where he was going, is worth the read alone.
