I guess it isn't possible to PM a person if I have a book on their wish list. If they wanted to spend the credit, and had time to read, they would be perusing this web site.

One of my books on my bookshelf has been wishlisted 3 times, and one book has been wishlisted once. It might be nice to PM the person in case they did not notice these books are available, but I don't want to be a pest.

there is no way to know who has your book WL'd.  Plus they may be out of credits or out of town or something.  they do get emails notifying them that a book is available.

that said, is this book being held up from being open to the rest of PBS because it is on someone's WL but not being taken?

It's possible that a different edition of the same book is on someone's wishlist.  They may specifically want the hardback or the trade paperback or whatever.

If you're basing it on the title, not the ISBN, that's probably the case.

I think there's still a thread in the Book Bazaar where you can highlight books on your shelf that have other editions wishlisted.

Compare the binding type on the book you have to the one's that are WL. If your's are sitting on your shelf it's most likely because you have paperback and the WL is for hardback, large print or audio.  Usually when people WL those, they only want those.   I want the audios for when I walk.  Check and see if there are other versions of your ISBN and binding available on PBS.  If you put the book on your reminder list you can see how many of that version are in the PBS system. If your books match the binding type that's WL but have a dif ISBN you can post a thread in book bazaar and most likely they'll get snapped up right away.  PBS does send an email when a dif version of a WL book has been posted.  But I know I turned that feature off.  I was getting a ton of PBS emails everyday, the same emails over and over again about some  books I have WL for audio CD.  I want the cd's not the paperbacks that are readily available. So I turned that off because I was literally getting like 15 emails from PBS everyday about these.   If you post an actual WL book the book is automatically offered to the 1st person in the WL line. So you must have a different version.

I just checked out your shelf. 2nd Chance by James Patterson is one of the books I have WL as an audio.  That may be one of the one's you're talking about.  If I didn't have the email feature turned off it would be telling me you had it everyday.

No, I'm not holding any book for someone else. So this is not holding up the book for someone.

Also, I did a search for the book by the ISBN I have, not by title, so if it came up in a search, the edition the person wants is what I have.

Mrslefty: I do not have the audio book, I have the paperback. Perhaps you searched by title, not ISBN.

Cindy, any idea what to search on for that Bazaar thread where you can 'highlight books on your shelf that have other editions wishlisted'?  Lots of threads have suggested this, but when I search for it, I can never find it.  Any help would be much appreciated!

Try doing a "subject only" forums search for "different isbns"

The current thread (current for this month) is called "November Books with Different ISBN". Somehow the word "wishlist" got left out but that's the usual title: <Name of Month> Wishlist Books with Different ISBN.

Bernie is usually the one who keeps the thread moving from month to month, so you might also search on her name.

My guess is that other people have posted the same book into the system before you, and the people you're talking about are being offered those books instead of yours.  If they have a book on their wishlist, if they are next in line, they automatically get a message from the system when the book they want has been posted or is available when it's their turn to receive it.  It's pretty cool, actually.  You can also, however, see someone's wishlist and post a book directly to just them rather than into the main system.  Carol Ann

Aha! So the person who has a book on their bookshelf the longest gets first in line when someone requests it?

I thought this matchup process was random.

Chuck, PBS is based on the FIFO system--First In, First Out-- and the WL is part of that (but will change shortly.)

You got it, Chuck!  It took me awhile to figure all of it out myself - the software is really quite cool since everything is so automated.

I know that yours is a paperback.  I was just saying that's why it could be showing up as a WL book if you search by title. Yours must have a dif ISBN or they would be on WL hold.  They won't just go on your shelf if the ISBN matches a WL book. They would automatically go into WL hold.  Could they have gone into WL hold and then either timed out or were denied by the other person?  Check and see if the ISBN#'s match. If they don't then post a thread in Book Bazaar listing the books and maybe put it in your signature here.  I did that the couple times I had a WL book with dif ISBN and they were snapped up quickly.  Which books are you talking about anyway?

Chuck, I just searched the books you have posted on your shelf, and while there are a few that only have 2 or 3 copies in the system (The Creatures of Man, The Edge of Tomorrow, Octogon, and True Colors), most of them on your shelf have dozens or even hundreds currently available in the system (Second Chance, Angela's Ashes, From a Buick 8, Prey, and Wanderlust all have 200+ available).   So, as others have pointed out, the books on your shelf must have a different ISBN# than the ones that are on people's wishlist.  Often, people will put hard cover or audio books on their WL when there are currently a lot of available paperbacks in the system.  Those people have already gotten an email about the paperbacks available in the system, and they are not interested.

I noticed that this is your second or third question regarding the way the wishlist operates.  It would probably help you a lot if you reviewed the information provided in the help section about wishlists.  I've noticed that PBS has one of the most comprehensive help sections I've ever seen.  I doubt that you could come up with a question about how the site works that isn't addressed there. :)

If you still think you have a book on your shelf (that isn't being requested) that is on someone's wishlist, please post the details on the book (author, title, isbn) so we can see for ourselves and marvel at it.  There is always a chance that there is a bug in the system.
