In 1803 Andrea and Nicholas marry. As they were enjoying their lovemaking, the English King sends the groom on a quest. Nicholas expects to return home shortly even as his independent bride remains angry about his departure. However, the plan to assassinate Napoleon fails and for the next seven years Nicholas languishes in a French jail. Finally, in 1810, Andrea buys Nicholas' his freedom.
When Nicholas returns home, he finds that his estate has been saved by the prudent business dealings of his spouse, whose work with thoroughbreds has made her famous. Though his passion for his spouse is at a new high and she reciprocates, both fight each other for control of their relationship and their estate. Unbeknownst to the combatants is a sinister plot to eliminate Nicholas forever.
