The story is a continuation of the first book not just a look at another character in the story. I felt it took awhile to get Pearl to the Dakota territory and the story seemed to drag.....It was not a bad story/book but not as interesting as "Ruby" the first book in the series. I am not sure if I will continue to read the rest of the series.

Second in a series, which i like but not as good as her other series. Of course this an older series and different topics. I found it more on the funny side.

Book 2 of Dakotah Treasures. Author Lauraine Snelling takes readers further forward in Ruby Torvalds story as Dove House becomes a well-known establishment. Ruby plays matchmaker between the lovely but hidden Pearl and the carpenter Soren, who longs to uncover the beauty in Pearl that seems to be damaged by a tragic childhood. Rubys own heart is torn by loyalty to the major and a surprising new suitor. But when a disaster threatens their future, will these jewels of the prairie be forced to abandon their dreams for the security of the east?

I feel invested in this series after reading the first book, Ruby. In the second installment, Pearl finds her way to Medora after running away from a controlling father who has arranged her marriage to a widower (with five children) she doesn't love. Pearl had warning of her father's plan and applied to be the first teacher in Medora. She loves teaching at the mission in her hometown and although she has never been so far from her family, she is desperate to escape. When she is hired, she gets her younger brother to help her. Upon arrival in Dakota, Pearl questions her actions. The town is small and undeveloped. The station master directs her to the hotel where she meets Ruby, the owner. They soon become best friends and Pearl finally shares her story. Meanwhile, Pearl's father is not happy. He comes to take her home. Will Pearl's new friends and especially Carl be able to help Pearl when her father arrives or will Pearl give in and return to a life of unhappiness to please her Father? Perhaps the prayers of her new friends will availeth much!

Ruby Torvald has turned Dove House, the scandalous inheritance her father left to her and her sister, into a respectable establishment. Her newest boarder is Pearl Hossfuss, a twenty-two-year-old schoolteacher from Chicago. Hiding scars within and without, Pearl has given up hope that any man would want to marry her. Her father has his own ideas, insisting she marry his clerk, a widower with 5 children.
So Pearl flees to Dakota Territory in response to an ad requesting a teacher for the town of Little Missouri. She finds teaching. . . .
I liked this book very much.

Should have read the other books before this one. If you get the chance, try to read them in order, but it was still easy to follow, very simple story line and fun to read. I enjoy the dakotah treasures series.

This book nearly lived up to its predecessor, Ruby. But it did not quite succeed in holding my attention; Snelling may have spread herself too thin in trying to concentrate on so many characters, not just Ruby, Opal, and "the girls," but also Pearl, the schoolteacher, and a suitor for nearly every woman. Also, four weddings in the last 57 pages of the book felt a bit too convenient. Still, I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the Dakotah Treasures series.

I am enjoying this entire series and I will certainly read other works by Lauraine Snelling. Life in the Dakotas was hard and women had to make do with what the Lord gave them. But there was romance and joyful occasions that made the life worthwhile. I read about these women of courage and I wonder how I would have dealt with the hardships in making the wild west a home. Pearl came from Chicago and a world of plenty to living in the west with only her personal belongings to start a new life. She met the women from Book 1 and with them forged a happy life.
