Hi! Someone requested a book from me & I agreed to mail it to them, but now I found out that there is what looks to be a tiny pen mark on the bottom of the book (it's on the very bottom of the back cover and it's also on the bottom edge of the pages). I know this is not a remainder mark, so I'm wondering if it's still okay to mail this book? I'm not sure if I explained myself well. The ink dot is not inside the book - only on the outside. Thanks for any help you can give me! :-) |

IMO this is postable. As long as their is no writing on text pages. If they can have a remainder mark I don't see that a pen mark would make it unpostable. |

Okay, that's what I was thinking. Thanks for your input, and thanks for answering my other question, too. :-) |

Think those can be considered 'remainder' marks - marks put there by the library or book seller. The books are perfectly postable. Pat |

And remainder marks are not always giant red marker. Some stores use colored ball-point pen instead. Either way, one line across the bottom of the book does not make the book unpostable, especially if the book is in good condition otherwise. |

I see this phrase a lot, what is a remainder mark? |

It's a mark on the bottom of the book. Booksellers often sell the remaining unsold portion of a printing (the "remainder") at a discount. To prevent you from returning it for a full refund they put the mark there. |

Remainder marks can be on any page edges, top, bottom, or less common, sides. It could be a colored line, or maybe just a marker dot. Sometimes, they will cut off a small piece of the corner of the cover In any case, writing (like a name) or marks are OK on page edges (but not dirt or stains). |

I always PM the requester if I am in doubt about the condition of a book.

Vic, if the book meets PBS guidelines, do not PM the receiver because then they will begin to expect it. plus if they don't answer you, do you still send? |
