Penn State University 2007 (College Prowler)
Penn State University 2007 - College Prowler Author:Alyssa Fried, Tim Williams Introduction from the Author In 2005, Penn State celebrated its 150th birthday. Since it opened as an agricultural school on a large mass of vacant land in 1855, PSU has become one of the largest universities in the country, encompassing 11 campuses and over 90,000 students and faculty. It is also among the leading research institutions ... more »in the nation, and has made important and often historical breakthroughs in every field, from the study of American literature to nuclear science. Of course, you cannot mention Penn State in conversation without mentioning the famous Nittany Lion football team or Joe Paterno, the most successful college football coach of all time. Both the team and its leader serve as the ultimate example of Penn State pride!
For all its accomplishments and continuous growth, Penn State remains a learning institution. Higher-level courses are kept small, teacher to student ratios are low, and student academics are a priority. Every effort is made to keep students from feeling "lost in the crowd" at such an enormous school. When I first came to Penn State, I was undecided about my major. I knew it was somewhere between English, art history and conservation, photography, and telecommunications; or perhaps it was something I hadn't yet discovered. Penn State was one of few schools in the East to offer great programs for each of my prospective majors and many others I might have considered. I also received a taste of what it meant to be part of the Penn State community. It seems as though every person I meet, even outside of campus, has a connection to the school. This book is intended to give you, the reader, a fair and unbiased view of all that Penn State has to offer, as well as what it may be lacking. Hopefully, it'll help make the most difficult decision you've faced in 18 years a little easier. Alyssa Fried, Author
