The first in the series of Bad Hair Day Mysteries, featuring Marla Shore of Cut N Dye Salon in Florida, I found it quite fun to read. The beginning started off slow, and I was beginning to wonder if I would finish it or not. Many of the characters were introduced quickly and I found myself asking who is this again? (once they were referred to later on) The same thing happedned in her second book, Hair Raiser. I think if I had been consistant in reading the book, (not putting it down for a week and picking it back up) I might have better been able to follow the story better. The book just didnt grab my attention anough to hold on tight. Maybe if I was stuck on an airplane for 4 hours..... There wasnt really any humor in the story, (which I happen to like) Just your standard who-done-it mystery. I have already bought the entire series so I plan on reading them all. I will say that after I got through the first half of the book, the actions picked up, and drew me in a little better. I was totally shocked at the ending! Overall I gave it a good rating, I guess because I got so spoiled on the Bubbles Yablonski series first.
This is the first of the "Bad hair day" Series. A women is poisoned while haviong a perm. There is no shortage of suspects, including the main character, Marla Shore, the owner of the beauty shop. Each suspect has a "past" which is uncovered in the investigation. I enjoyed this book more than I expected to, I will be reading the reat of the series.
When Marla's first customer of the day dies in her perming rods Marla finds herself desperate to investigate. Mrs. Kravits (gotta love the name) is a blackmailing busybody who as it turns out has more then one enemy. When Detective Vail finds out about the blackmailing he now finds the motive behind Mrs. Kravits' death and believes Marla is the murderer.
This book sets up the start of a new series nicely. The book isn't bogged down with too many characters but does shade the lines between who is good and who isn't. Marla has a past she is trying to keep secret and Det. Vail is trying to uncover it.
I thought this book was well written and quite funny in parts. The secondary characters were interesting and I hope they have more involvement in the upcoming books.
Marla Shore is a beauty salon owner. Someone dies in her shop. Marla tries to find the killer.
The Bad Hair Day Mysteries is a great series.
First book of the series
Well, I gave this one a shot and had a really hard time getting into it. Have too many other cozies on my shelf to spend the time struggling through the rest of this. Oh well, you can't win 'em all!
Really fun book, love the hair puns!!!
Such a good premise, with great punny titles in the series - but, bleh! Even if you can get past the stilted writing, the characters and plot (including the shocking secret!) aren't worth your time. The first-person narrator isn't exactly annoying but there's something that's just "off" about her character. She's oddly dated. It's kind of like your 82-year-old aunt decided to write herself as a 30-something. I know this first book in the series is a little over ten years old at this point, but lots of lightweight fiction WAY older than this still holds its own.
I really enjoyed Nancy Cohen. I am from Florida and could relate to the setting. This was the first book I read by her and will read more. Fun read.!
Marla is a gutsy hairdresser. What fun to read.
first in a series of a hairdresser turned detective when a client dies in her shop. good story and humor.
Meet Marla Shore, a Florida beauty salon owenr with a knack for creating dazzling 'dos----and solving mysteries....
Marla was already having a bad hair day, but when one of her clients dies while getting a perm in her salon, her day just can't get any worse...until the smugly competent Detective Vail accuses her of poisioning wealthy widow's coffee creamer!
I have read all her books to date(2006/07)
The stories are fast paced and well written..the only thing that sets my teeth on edge is her over use of the main character thinking to herself OK pal..I hate that phrase..but that's just me..it's the only thing I do not like about the books.
Cozy mystery set in SE Florida.
