The First of these stories.
The Peterkins originally hesitated about publishing their family papers but were decided by referring the matter to the lady from Philadelphia. A little uncertain wheather she might happen to be at Philadelphia, they determined to write and ask her.

What do you do when you pour salt instead of sugar into your coffee? Or if the movers place your piano with the keyboard flush against the window sill? Or with a horse that simply refuses to move? If you belong to the Peterkin family, the answers to these questions will be as follows: have a chemist drom something into the coffee to counteract the salt; place the piano stool outside and play from the front porch; feed the horse whipped cream. In every case, of course, you also ask the Lady from Philadelphis.
The Peterkins, you see, never choose the obvious solution to any problem, however slight it may be. Their characteristic opening move is to call a family conference, on the dubious assumption that several absurd lines of reasoning will somehow lead to one logical one.
