My rating is on the basis of Ms. Gross' thirty minute interview of the author as he flogged this book on WHYY today (27 February 2017). His mission is to offer an actual portrait of an animal or insect with a black or a white background, with a special interest in memorializing creatures that may go extinct in the future. He has put his money where his mouth is, buying a worthless salt marsh (a few cattle graze there) in Nebraska to provide aid and comfort for various local and migratory species.
He praises his wife for being so understanding and relates that he tries to make the time he is at home rather than traveling special to his wife and three kids.
