Set in 1910 Hawaii the title of the book comes from the practice of using pictures of Japanese women, who want to become mail order brides for the Japanese workers in the cane fields, to make marital matches. However, this picture bride is not a bride at all but a man looking for a wife and it is sent in secret to the mainland. It appears that deceit and trickery were used to lure a young girl to the island and now her sister has arrived to help with the wedding and is startled to find that the man she thought her sister had come to marry is not who she thought he was. Can the sister get past the anger and resentment she feels towards this man and will he work with her to find her missing sister? Some suspense, some forgiveness and ultimately love complete the story.
