Thoroughly enjoyed this story of the 'Pilgrim' family who settled in remote McCarthy Alaska. The damage done to them by National Park Service was matched by the damage they did to themselves and the community. I thought the author presented an even-handed tale of what can happen to people who shut themselves off from the world, yet expect the world to understand them. And he also, perhaps accidentally, presented a good picture of a writer who entered the scene with a liberal agenda, only to see both sides of the picture more clearly than he wished. I guess he learned that even sociopaths such as the father of this family can occasionally have valid points.

Absolutely riveting. Extremely well-written. Believable. Informative. And ultimately sad.
