Each play, with the exception of Ibsen's LITTLE EYOLF, is preceded by an introduction that offers clues on how the play can be approached; discussion in depth is left to the individual instructor. These instroductions are designed to reveal something of the author's intention, of his individuality and originality, and also something of the character of the theater for which he wrote. Where necessary, a context of time, place, and milieu has been provided. Instead of an introdution for LITTLE EYOLF, the editors have included the transcript of a student discussion of that play. Excerpts from Aristotle and Tolstoy, included in an appendix, define the essential terms and concepts of dramatic criticism and offer contrasting theories of literature.« less
