Here is a link to the FAQ that has the best info on fees/membership options: http://www.paperbackswap.com/help/help_item.php?id=693

Nothing is going to happen to your credits. They are still yours to use; however depending upon which level you decide to participate, there may be a swap fee charged when redeeming the credit.

A la carte = No annual fee, $0.49 charge per order (3 books from 1 person = 1 order, 3 books from 3 different people = 3 orders). After 2/15, if you send books via Paid Postage, you can earn a swap fee to use to redeem your credit. *No forum posting for this level, but you will be able to read them.*

Limited = $12 annual fee, includes 30 free swaps. After 30, they would be $0.49 per order, but again can be waived by using the paid postage.

Standard = $20 annual fee ($18 if you do it before the changeover). Unlimited fee-free swapping plus other perks (500 WL).

So, it really depends on how many books you order/receive per year. Once you look at that, you can figure out what level works best for you.

If you have any questions after looking at the info, feel free to ask.

Yep, it's a lot to take in and a bit confusing. Take your time and again, don't hesitate to ask if something doesn't make sense.

I have two simple questions about the new membership  that I am hoping to find the answers to...I hope someone can help me ...

1- I  paid for the limited membership  ( 30 transactions) - Does this mean 30 books I receive ? OR Does this mean 30 books Received & Sent ? Is  One transaction considered only if I REQUEST a book. Or is it also a transaction if I SEND  out a book to another member?

2- If I have say,  5 credits in my account right now -If I don't use those by Feb 15 , then when I do use those credits ( assuming it is after Feb 15)  to request  books will those be deducted from my 30 swaps/transactions?  For example if I  use all those after Feb. 15th  I will then have 25 transactions/swaps left---is  this correct?

Thanks in advance  for any help anyone can provide!
Happy reading to everyone!!

Hey Beverly,

1 - transaction fees are only on items requested. No fee to send.

2 - Yes, any credits not spent before 2/15 will be under the new membership terms.

Remember you can save a little bit by ordering multiples (3 books from 1 person is just 1 transaction, while 3 books from 3 different people is 3 transactions.

Plus, if you choose to use paid postage to send books, you will earn a free swap fee that you can use after your 30 that are included with the Limited membership.

Hope that helps!

My problem is that I've only been a member for less than a month. In that time I've sent out 9 books, requested 8. If that rate keeps up I'd definitely want to have a standard membership, but I have no idea if it's just flush at the beginning or if I'll see a sharp drop-off in a little bit. Any advice on how active I can expect to be? I have a full wish list and more books to post, plus others on my reminder list that have copies available (more than a page worth). The other question, that no one can answer, is how many of those books will go away as people leave. Any advice?

Hey Deborah! Welcome, sorry that you're coming on at a transitional time.

No one can answer how many books will go away when people leave. I've been tracking since the announcement and since 2/1 we've lost about 200,000 books, but only 31,000 of those were unique titles (only 1 copy in system).

I think that requests from shelves might die down a bit after 2/15 as people would probably prefer to spend a credit & swap fee (for a la carte members) on WL books versus those readily available.

If you've got more than 30 books on your Reminder List that you are interested in, that still have copies available, and you think you'll post at least 30 books to earn credits for those books (WL books do get snapped up quicker), then it would be worth it to spend the $18 and get the $2 discount for pre-buying the standard membership. That way, you can give it a year and see how things go for you.

That's what I was planning. I've seen the numbers available of some books on my reminder list go down, but I'm willing to give it a go with the full membership and see what happens. Thanks!

I decided to go with the standard member ship but figured that since they were giving a discount that I could purchase 3 year membership (18 x 3).  System allowed me to complete the transaction.

Now I'm wondering if this was not a good idea.  I have checked various locations to see if it gives me my expiration date:  with no success.

Any help would be appreciated.

Lora, you have proof of purchase in your Receipts - and, the rumor is, that your membership expiration will show on your main account page.  If that is correct, and it came from a good source, but not directly from Admin to me,  then on the 15th it should show.

What happens to the books that I have requested prior to 2/15, but they have not been accepted/mailed yet?  If the first person doesn't respond and the request needs to go to another user, and this second "request" occurs after 2/15, will I be charged a fee for the order?

Lora -- My understanding is the same as Anna's, that you've purchased a 3-year membership at the discounted rate.

Lisa -- it's the original request date that determines whether you're under the new system or the old.  Even if your request rolls over to a new sender after the 15th, there should be no swap fee attached.  (If you find a problem with this, and a swap fee IS attached, you would let the Admin Team know by sending in Feedback.  They would fix it for you.)
