I thought Robyn Carr's Grace Valley series(precedes the Virgin River series) sounded very similar to Mitford but with a lot more drama going on. I think it starts with 'deep in the valley' the 'just over the mountain', 'down by the river'? the virgin river ones are awesome but amuch sexier storyline bringing in some of the characters from the grace valley...grace valley covers the same 'romance' that isn't a main focus but carries over all three books.
