Did you first read through the Help Center docs to get info about the site and how to do stuff?

OH MY YES!!!!!!!!  I was so afraid of making a mistake I must have read it a dozen times (ok more like 2 or 3) and I still had a million question.  I found this forum right away and started asking questions!  Some of the answers were in the help center but I guess I needed reassurance that I was doing things right!

Hi,

Yes, I really did read all those Help Center documents to get information and learn how to do things on this site.  I guess that is my personality.  I do things very thoroughly.

I just love this site!  This is also my first post.

Sincerely,

Debby

Yes!  I read everything in the Help Center several times.  I still go there if I have a question.

Okay, I'll admit it.  I read the posting requirements, but did not initally read much else.  I am the person who always refuses to read the owner's manuals on things too.  I prefer to learn as I go.  The consequence being I posted a bunch of stupid questions to these forums at the beginning, to which I recieved (rightfully so), a bunch of  "from the help center" responses.

I too read alot of from the Help Center, but not all of it.  I then went back when I needed the answer to a question and to my questions at least I found 99% of the answers.  The instructors at the Nursing School I attended never answered any questions, they always told us to look it up ourselves, because "You'll remember it better that way".  :)  So I have long been in the habit of trying to look things up for myself before I ask someone else about it.  I remember we would all get really annoyed with those instructors, but unfortunately, they were right!

After I had been here for awhile I just loved the site so much, and had so much free time on my hands that I wanted to do something to "volunteer".  So, I volunteered to be a Tour Guide.  After that you can bet I read all the rest of the Help Center+, but there are still alot of times that I get a question and I have to go back to the Help Center to do some research on it.

I did not, but I am trying to remember how detailed the Help Center was when I joined! It was so long ago!

I think I read it more now to make sure I am telling new members the correct information!

I do remember that when I joined...

- You could not send PM's to other members

- You did not have a Tour Guide to help you with your questions

- There was no option to print postage on the wrappers

- Some of the forums were just starting

- There were only 20,000 books posted

- The web site looked completely different

- There was no Book Journal

- You could not trade with Box of Books

There have been many more changes since I joined but I can't recall them!! These guys rock!!

Diane

shamefully no I didn't.  It seemed fairly straight forward to me, I did read on how to wrap a book, and when I wasn't sure about things I either looked in the help file or scanned the forums for my answer, which I still do on occasion.  I don't think I asked too many stupid questions, and as far as I know only made one boo-boo (the dreaded press&seal episode bad me).

No, I didn´t. I knew my books aren´t something people would consider unpostable. I only read them when I received the first books which looked horrible.

Yes, I read about posting requirements, how to send, and how to receive.  It really is very helpful!

LOL Diane there was no Help Center when you joined.  I joined 4 months after you and all there was for help then was about 30 or 40 FAQs and I read every single one.  I also am a 'don't read the manual' type, but joining an online site is another matter.  I wanted to be sure I knew how things worked before I even posted my first book.

This is a Book Reader's site, we love to read.  That said, OF COURSE I read the Help Center.  I still refer back to it when I need help (and of course, utilize these forums).  I haven't tried the Live Chat yet...

Well, it's technically a Book-Swapper's site, but I am assuming all us book swappers are also avid book readers...  *grin*

Yes, I did...but as Leise mentioned, it was just a short little FAQ back then, nothing like the extensive Help Center info now!  I still utilize the Help Center as things change here all the time and if I'm not sure about something I don't hesitate to check the "official ruling" on things. :)

I read the wrapping instructions probably 4 times because I was so paranoid that I was going to do it wrong! I read through a few of the HC topics as well, but I find that I use them more now than when I first started. Mostly I know what's allowed, what to do in a situation, etc. but it's reassuring to look through the HC for confirmation. :)

ETA: And yes, even when I joined, the HC wasn't nearly as detailed as it is now.

Actually, I came to the forums and read back through several pages of posts, particularly the thread...maybe it's on this forum, I can't remember...about tips for newbies. I spent an evening or two just reading about problems people had run into, and pet peeves, etc., and I found that very helpful and informative.

Then when I've had specific questions, I've definitely checked the Help Center, but just for specific things. Since the forums are more conversational, I just found that to be a more interesting way of finding out how things work here.

I read them several times to make sure I knew what I was doing. I was so worried I was going to do something wrong and get "yelled" at!!

Yes, I did. I still read them from time to time, as things are changed.  I know I read how to wrap the book half a dozen times because I was so scared I would do something wrong!

I can't say I read every single part of the Help Center, but I certainly read the basics on how to swap, what is postable, etc.  I also read lots of forum topics to figure it out.  I still refer to the Help Center with specific questions.

I did because I was afraid of posting a book that wasn't acceptable. The help center at that time was short.

That's right--the little list of FAQs!  I was going to say I didn't remember reading the help center when I joined but when you mentioned the FAQs I do remember reading them.  Then I was a member for probably a year before I stumbled into the forums, and realized how much was going on and how many issues there were to be aware of.  I have hopefully become a much better trader now, and yes, I have subsequently gone to the help center and read the entire thing.

It would be great if R & R could let less involved members know how helpful these forums are--maybe a mention in the periodic newsletter that goes out regarding subjects that are being discussed.  I know they helped me tremendously.
