A great Forgotten Realms novel that was also once a great game.

Pool of Radiance

The spellcaster, Shal, seeks to avenge the death of her wizard master.
The ranger thief, Ren, hunts the assassin who brutally murdered his beloved Tempest.
The cleric, Tarl, prepares for a confrontation with the undead.

A possessed dragon commands the undead armies of Valhingen Graveyars and the beasts from the ruins of Phlan. Desperate, Shal, Ren, and Tarl join forces to deliver Phlan and the entire Moonsea from the dark possession of the evil reincarnate ... Tyranthraxus.

This is a light, easy read that's also a lot of fun. I'd consider it a good introduction to the fantasy genre. While parents would certainly want to preview the book to make sure they're comfortable with the subject matter (violence, undead, and if memory serves correctly, a little bit of intimacy that would probably rate a PG-13 in a film), I'd have no trouble letting a younger reader take a swing at this one.
