I just received a book and the very first page - title page, is torn. Definitely more than an inch. All I can seem to find is "Tears up to an inch are OK if they don't interfere with text." It does not interfere with text, but it is bigger than an inch. So I'm trying to figure out if this is postable or not.
Thanks! |

This has always been a grey area, with member's opinions varying. Pages not containing text can be missing, as many libraries will remove a non-text page when discarding a book, which is acceptable. The rule of "tears up to an inch that don't interfere with text" I take to refer to text pages only. Others would differ. Personally, I would not be bothered by a tear on the title page. Sorry for a vague answer but as I said, it's a grey area. |

I personally have no issue with it, but I want to make sure that I mark it correct in the system. Not to mention, this is a new member and I don't want them getting in trouble later if they think this is okay. |

The tear doesn't meet the rule (no torn pages) or the minor exception (up to 1" if it doesn't interfere with text), so technically the book is not postable. The location of the tear makes it a - who really cares technically not postable issue for most people. You can handle that how you feel those types of issues should be handled. I personally would mark it as a Problem swap, not ask for my credit back, and in the memo note that I do not want my credit back but that books with tears in the pages over 1" deep are not postable. That way the book is properly recorded but the sender isn't penalized. |

Melanie, I marked it in good condition and sent a message with it mentioning the tear and how those big tears make it not postable. |

Non text pages can be missing, so if those types of pages have writing or tears or whatever on them, IMO they don't count towards unpostability since you can neatly remove the page and restore postability to the book.
