I'm still pretty new here so I have no history with holiday mailings. Do people find that it's a good idea to post books now or wait until January when the holiday rush is over? I do have some I was thinking of posting but was wondering if it would be prudent to wait.

Thank you!

Michele

Swaps seem to take a downswing when folks are shopping for holiday gifts, plus there seems to be some anecdotal evidence here that more books go lost in DEC when the delivery systems are overwhelmed with holiday packages.  But then we see a big upswing in JAN-- some members even use gift money to buy credits to get more books here.

And remember if you place any holiday orders thru Amazon, do it thru the PBS homepage and that will garner the club  a small amount of income which helps prevent us from having to pay membership dues.

Well, it depends.  This Monday I mailed out 9 books; this is the most in one day I've had in a long time.  I think people are ordering books for gifts this year.  So if you would like the credits, you might want to list books you think people would want now.  I'm seeing that Children's books are popular right now.  Then save some to post in January.  Remember this is FIFO so the sooner you get some books posted the faster they will come up in the FIFO line.

I say post them. Requestors can decide if they want to order or not.

There are also the lines at the post office. This is the time of year that the fee for PBS Postage is well worth it.

December is a weird time on PBS. The mail seems to go either super slow or super fast. Many book orders roll over as folks do not remember to use Vacation Hold.

There will be some people who will order on the Holidays.  If you don't want to/unable to mail use the vacation hold to avoid getting orders.  There is a higher volume of mail and higher volume of lost and damaged mail.  USPS delivering 7 days week Nov 17 thru Christmas Day.  I think it's for packages.

I use to put my account on hold in December but I use PBS Postage now so I can avoid the post office for the most part. I find the books travel faster during the busy times as the post office is better staffed.

As already mentioned, the holidays are a mixed bag for PBS members.  Not sure I'd blame USPS for more lost books, but I know I have had more timed out transactions during the holidays.

If you have time to mail out books, then go ahead and post them.  If you get busy for the holidays use vacation hold to suspend orders so you don't have missed and timed-out transactions that can have a negative impact on your member status.

Traditionally, early to mid January is a good time to receive PBS books as people read their Christmas present books and post them when finished.

Post the books but use PBS postage.  I do.  It saves having to stand in line at the post office.  I live in a large city, so it's worth it not to have to deal with lines.

I'm waiting until January. Last year I mailed 6 books in December.  Only one person marked his as received.  Time was closing in and I gently contacted the other 5 people.  All of them had received the books.  All of them had been too busy to mark received.

I really do believe more packages go lost (or get delayed) more during the holidays, so I do try to avoid sending anything media mail or parcel post in Dec....but I could be wrong....

Well, there is more weather. But I've also had books go faster during December than at any other time. Books getting across the country in under two days? Yep. Faster AND slower.

Personally, I put my bookshelf on Vacation Hold starting around Thansgiving until Xmas day because I don't want to stand in line at crowded post offices, I am much busier at the holidays and don't want the hassle of packaging books and as others have mentioned I find that books sent around the holidays tend not to get marked received without a gentle reminder from me. For me, having my bookshelf on hold removes one layer of stress from me at a busy time of the year...and because all my WL books are on automatic request, any WL books offered to me are instantly requested for me.
