Re-presenting the Past: Women and History
Representing the Past Women and History Author:Ann-Marie Gallagher, Cathy Lubelska, Louise Ryan This is a collection of new essays by feminist historians offering a lively and engaging look at the innovative work being done by feminists in the field of women's history. Looking at the processes through which women have been excluded, silenced and misrepresented in stories of the past, all of the chapters in this book demonstrate the effect... more »iveness of the methodologies they propose as remedy for this. It is composed of a series of case studies which, with the exception of Melanie Ilic's chapter, will all focus on Britain, Empire, or the Commonwealth. Section one, 'Competing Representations', will be made up of three chapters which will look at the different ways in which women's representations of themselves may be reinterpreted and re-presented in sources such as newspapers and biographies (included here is a chapter on women in the Irish Civil War of 1922-3 - comparing newspaper accounts of the Republican women and the women's own autobiographical accounts). Section two, 'The Process of Representation: Visibility and Invisibility', made up of four chapters, will consider how the history of imperialism and national identity have excluded issues of gender and how this is being challenged by feminist historians. The final section will concentrate on the primary sources - the generation of new sources as well as the rereading of familiar sources. Included here are chapters on the history of women's health and the history of women's leisure. For those interested in British history or the history of women in Britain.« less
