Before beginning The Pretender's Crown, you need to have read The Queen's Bastard first. I found this book much slower going. The plot is more complex and the heroine is more likable. The intrigue, and politics are still high in this second book but there is a lot less sex. You also get religion and morality questions as a bonus. I think that if you have read the first and loved it then The Pretender's Crown is a must read.
