This book covers Prince Philip from birth until his marriage to Queen Elizabeth II. There is a chapter on their early marriage years. Prince Philip had a rough upbringing with his deaf mother spending several years in psychiatric clinics beginning when he was 8 years old. His father went off and lived with his mistress. Philip was pretty much an orphan. He lived in France, Britain, Greece and Nazi Germany. Some of his relatives fought with the Nazis. He was described in this book as being "singular vitality, and dash---self-confident, opinionated, and devastatingly handsome." He was also very intelligent with considerable charm but had "volcanic outbursts". I enjoyed the book especially as it covered Prince Philip and offers an insight into how politics and war effected people.

In general I enjoyed this book. It covers Philip's family extensively as well as his life leading up to his marriage to Elizabeth and a few chapters on his life after marriage until she was crowned queen. It talks A LOT about his military service, but then I guess that is to be expected since that was a big part of his life before Elizabeth. Overall this is a good look at a man whom I did not know much about his youth or early years.
