Woodman is a great writer of British naval fiction. His character Captian Nathaniel Drinkwater is a well drawn and likable character. He has also filled the book with well written minor recurring characters. This is a great series. A Private Revenge is one of the books from the middle of the series but the author fills the reader in on what has gone before without boring with long winded explanations. Makes you wonder how they can recap a book in a page or two but take 400 pages to write the book in the first place.

While an interesting story, some of the subject matter wasn't to my liking, but it has to do with a person Drinkwater met very early on in his career. In this book Drinkwater defeats an old, hated enemy, but loses a good friend.

Finally, the ending of this book seems to be a retelling of a story line in "Flashman's Lady" by George Fraser. And Fraser's book pre-dates Woodman's book by 11 years.
