This was the first book of the 4-book series (Innocent Mage, Awakened Mage, this one, and Reluctant Mage) that I read, and really enjoyed it. The first two are good to get to know the ongoing characters, and some of the background. Although Miller does a good job of introducing the back story, I really wanted to see the whole story, not just high-level comments.
I liked the pacing here better than the first two, and am really looking forward to the 4th one (Reluctant). The characters are not just 1- or 2-dimensional caricatures, but have good and bad motives to them (although many of the "bad guys" are just bad, as you would expect).
