Everybody else loved this, why didn't I?
The "Horse Whisperer" angle was fine, it was just such a large part of the book in the beginning. I found myself checking the Virgin River series list to see who the characters were in the next book, instead of concentrating on Clay and Lilly. (BTW, the characters include one of the three ladies staying in the cabins, and a sexy, but broken, Riordian man, can't wait!)
A lot of the book was setting up the next several books, introducing new characters mainly. I think much of my problem with this book was that the main 2 characters were not Virgin River regulars; we'd never seen either Clay or Lilly before, and honestly, Nate and Annie were only featured in a short story.
So, if it was another author, I probably would have only rated this book at 3 stars, but I'm giving Carr a free pass. However, after not being impressed with Sheltering Hearts, thinking the short story Midnight Confessions from Midnight Kiss was pretty good but not enough, I'm hoping in Book #12, Wild Man Creek, Carr redeems herself in my eyes!

I agree with Rochelle. It's a Robyn Carr Virgin River book, so there's no way it could be bad, per se, but it was certainly my least favorite in the series so far. The first half of the book was almost exclusively about Clay and Lilly, two characters with an interesting story, but who we've never met before. The book then branches off to concentrate on the secondary story of what's going on with Jack (swoon) and the town, and the tertiary story about Colin O'Riordan, before coming back around to finish up the Clay/Lilly story. All good stories, but it felt disjointed because they really didn't interconnect in any way.

Again, it's a Robyn Carr book, so you don't want to pass it up and it definitely lays a lot of groundwork for future books in the series but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the prior Virgin River books.

I'm a little surprised at some of the negative reviews on this one. I'm a huge fan of the whole series and this one didn't disappoint. I liked Clay & Lilly's story and even though I missed the focus on the rest of the townsfolk, there was enough of Jack to keep me interested! I also loved the setup for the next book - can't wait to read about Colin!

Great story! Clay the was so sexy, beautifully described and I could picture his long hair. His sexual, in-charge way in the bedroom (or kitchen) was hot! Lily's gay friend's reaction to Clay was priceless. Carr just has a way of connecting her characters that I just love. I enjoyed the nasty ex-wife and her manipulations even though it lead to a heartbreaker. I always like that 3rd party conflict when they get caught. I can't get enough of Virgin River, the stories always touch me, make me cry and then make me happy. Robyn Carr's got it!

I actually really enjoyed this one. It might be because I am not reading the series in order and read about Clay and Lily in Kelly's story. So to me, they were regulars.

I always feel the book cover doesn't do the book justice since it always focuses on one couple, but really it seems like all of Carr's books focuses on several couples in town. So in one book you are really getting two to three stories plus revisiting old characters. Not only are you getting a typical romance from Clay and Lily but you are also getting a side story on Jack and several introductions to future characters.

Clay was really sexy in a laid back way. But I was really impressed with how Carr protray Lily. She was stuck in the past but it wasn't excessive although it seemed like is should be. Not once did I want to yell at her to get over it. I have no idea how Carr did that. My only problem was that whenever Clay or Lily talked to other family members, their speech turned very formal like a bad cowboys and indian movie. That was a bit annoying.

Jack's story was very interesting as well. An older lady passed away and left everything she owned to the town, naming Jack as the executor. It was up to Jack to figure out where that money should go. It was obvious where he will eventually spend it but it was good to have a nonlove story to add to the book. It seemed like an added bonus of a short story.

Great read and I really didn't want to put it down.

Promise Canyon is book 13 of an entire series about Virgin River, CA. Each book develops a new character that moves to the area. Yes, it is light reading, but the plots and the character developments are intriguing...and addictive. I highly recommend the entire series!

Loved the whole series of books from Robyn Carr on Virgin River. Hope she continues to write several more. There are several characters that she can expand on and make several different books.
