Great writing. I love the way she tells a story. Heart wrenching story, but good, really good.

As with "Pieces of My Sister's Life," Arnold's character development in "Promise the Moon" is phenomenal, bringing to life a family struggling to piece themselves back together in the aftermath of tragedy. I especially loved the chapters from the perspective of 10-year-old Anna, whose thoughts were at once innocent and heartbreakingly mature for a girl of her age.

The book was compelling with a very timely story. Natalie, the main character is a newly widowed young women with two small children. Her husband, an Iraq war veteran, killed himself leaving Natalie to cope with the huge emotional problems she and her children are feeling. I like how the author does not shy away from the ugly, serious subject matters. It is a difficult subject to read about the suicide of a young father and the guilt of those left behind. Add to that the fact that he is a veteran of a war not everyone supports, a war that many believe is wrong in the first place makes it even more interesting. This book was a gift.
