Now that Sheridan's work was enjoying a popular revival on the West End stage Baba was rich and planning to write a biography of her father revealing that two of the Lampeters were not Seymour's children.
Tessa Crichton is appealed to to try and prevent the biography's publication, she needs no encouragement. With all of her customary inquisitiveness she burrows deep into the Seymour-Lampeter family and arranges to meet the various members of it. Then she is brought to a halt by the disappearance of Dodo Seymour -- who is then identified as the body found in a burnt-out house, but who reappears from an impulsive visit overseas.
