I purchased a book and days later was told that they were having trouble finding it. Then a couple more days passed and I asked if they had any luck....they then marked it shipped. She has since let me know that they still have been unable to find the book.  How do I get my credit back? Or do I? It was book 3 in a set of 4 and of course I just finished book 2 :/

If she marked it mailed but did not actually find the book, she needs to contact PBS and ask them to cancel the transaction and your credit will be refunded. If she never marked it mailed and it rolled to the next person you will probably get the book from them. If the original transaction does not get canceled, the book will eventually go lost and you will get your credit back. But if the sender admitted to not having it PBS really needs to be involved in this so that things are straightened out, especially if she used credit assurance when she erroneously marked it mailed, since she gets a credit for that and it would be wrong for her to keep it.

ETA: you can check your transaction archive to see if the order in fact rolled over to someone else, you will see the book with an X on the order.

What Linda said yes  check your transaction page and make sure it's the same sender (and didn't roll over to another sender).  If they marked it mailed (but didn't really b/c it's still lost), the only way to cancel the transaction before it goes lost is for the sender to contact PBS admin.

ETA - and there's only a four day grace before the sender has to ask your permission to mail late.

From the Help Documents:

A book must be mailed within 48 hours of marking it mailed

& Can I send a book later?

When was the book marked mailed?  If it's been a week, maybe a gentle request that they have the transaction cancelled so you can be placed back on the wishlist?  If the member does not have the book in hand, extended delays are unfair and keep your name off the FIFO list and therefore unavailable to receive other copies posted into the system.  If the book turns up later, it can be reposted to their bookshelf.

I see that this can happen. Just today I had a book requested from me that I read over 2 years ago and was NOT listed on my bookshelf only my BIR, but somehow it was requested from me. I do have a book with a very similar title on my shelf though I don't understand how the 2 different iSBNs could have resulted in this type of malfunction in ordering.

I've lost books I posted before too. Ones that sat on my shelf for a long time.  So it happens.  I always just cancelled if I couldn't find it in a day or two of accepting the request.  Which is what the sender should have done in this case.
