An alien pyramid has appeared on Earth, squatting in the middle of Chicago. It is growing, destroying the city as it does--and nothing seems able to stop it, not even the U.S. military. Somehow, the alien device is snatching people and--for unknown reasons--transporting them into worlds of mythology. Dr. Lukacs is one of the victims. Granted, he's an expert on mythology. But myths are not something he'd thought to encounter personally--or wanted to . . .
Sure, he has a couple tough paratroopers along with him, as well as a blonde Amazon biologist (Actually she's South African, not Amazon.) Unfortunately, the paratroopers' modern weapons don't work, and the Greek gods are out to kill them all.
Well, they do have Medea and Arachne and the Sphinx on their side--both Sphinxes, actually, the Greek version as well as the Egyptian one. And at least some of the Egyptian gods seem friendly . . . but that can be a very mixed blessing . . . and whatever you do----Don't mention dwarf tossing!
A slap happy romp.

Highly enjoyable. This book is funny because of the situations and the characters, not because it was written to be "funny" (as in some of the later Xanth novels). The ending is quite satisfactory.

Really good!!! Starts in the University of Chicago (one of my daughters goes there) and gets crazy.

Starts as confusing militaristic SF and becomes confusing but interesting militaristic (but not particularly successfully so) fantasy/mythology. A bit too snarky and big on in-jokes to be my favorite, but definitely entertaining if you care at all about bad puns and Greek mythology.

Sort of a tough in cheek thriller. A pyramid arrives in Chicago destorying part of the Univ. there. It grows if attacked. Meanwhile people are missing, selectively. But one whole group goes at the same time confusing the issue. Some re-appear, most dead. It has a mini-universe inside of it peopled with gods of yore. Mostly Greek/Roman but some from Egypt. This is a conspiracy, by aliens as they do this on many worlds. We have some of our best scientists on it, some actually inside as they were part of the large group. It's a good fun read with some nice twists in it. Interesting take on myths, also. Worth the time to read.

A funny tale that takes the myth-understanding of old stories to a new level.
