I got a box of books once from eBay that not only reeked of smoke, but had a cigarette butt in the bottom of the box! It was the grossest thing ever :( :(

I poured baking soda directly on each book, that seemed to significantly reduce the smell after a few weeks. It's a little work to get the baking soda off the books though, so you might want to try some of the other methods first.

I create a baking soda tent, using a fast food tray and a plastic grocery bag.

Pour a box of baking soda into a container larger than the book's dimensions. Fan the book open (spine edge up, page end down) on the paper towel.Tie grocery bag closed.  I usually leave the book in there for about a week.  It's done a good job on smoky and musty books .
