However, not all high school students speak English as a first language, and the number of parents who speak English is even smaller, especially among the fastest-growing population demographic in the United States: Hispanics. The total number of Hispanics living in the United States in the year 2000 was 35,305,818, or 12.55% of the population. Spanish is the language spoken at home for 28 million (10% of the total U.S. population), with nearly half speaking English "less than very well." Further, there were 2,438,338 Hispanic or Latino children between the ages of 14 and 17 living in the United States. All of these statistics are expected to rise in the coming years.
