I received a request for a book, along with this RC: "I want a book in such good condition as to have no pen or pencil marks or highlighting on any page.  No bent pages.  No cracks or rips on binding."

What exactly do you think cracks on binding means? Are they talking about lines on the spine? Is this kind of RC even allowed? No bent pages?

Any kind of RC is allowed, unless what they are asking for woudl be against PBS rules. You can also decline any RC, if you wish to.

I am not sure what they mean about cracks on the binding, either ... to be safe I would probably interpret that as spine creases (or white lines).

Unless my book looked brand new, I would probably not accept this RC.

Bent pages might include something like dog ears. Books with bent pages are perfectly postable normally, but apparently this person does not wish to have them.

Thanks Sara! This book is in very good condition, but it does not look brand new. It has a few spine creases and one bent page, so I will be declining.

This member must want books in like new condition, and I'm assuming they don't get very many!

Folks can request books be wrapped in unicorn hair if they want to, but we don't have to accept.

When you decline the RC, you'll be asked for a reason, which the other member will see.  That can be a good opportunity for a brief, constructive, gentle message about the RC, like "I don't understand what 'cracks in the spine' mean".  I've modified my own RCs based on that kind of feedback, to make them clearer (I hope).

I don't have any RC like that, but I get a LOT of books in like new and even some brand new books here!  Do I expect that, NO, but it's nice to see once in a while as opposed to the messes I've been getting....... been seeing really beat up books lately that I would never post!

Thanks everyone! I declined the RC and tried to nicely say that I didn't understand what the requester meant by cracks on binding.

I have gotten quite a few like new books, which is always a pleasant surprise, but I usually don't expect to receive like new books.

Unicorn hair... Teehee.  wink
