Subject: Question About Using Vacation Hold

I'm going to have to limit my postage budget to a certain amount a month (for example, I can mail 10 books with that amount) so I figured that if I used up that amount, then I could put my account on vacation hold for the rest of the month until I get my next postage "allotment".

First of all, is that okay per PBS rules? I will still be around, marking things received and taking care of things; I just don't want any more book requests.

Second, what happens to the books on my shelf regarding FIFO? I know I'll be skipped over for any active request, but do I keep moving up the list?

Third, what happens to my wishlist? I won't be offered any books, I assume, but do I continue to move up the list on those too?

Also, can I "unhold" a single book on my wishlist while my account is still on vacation hold?

Thanks -- I read the FAQs on this but I'm still confused.

Yes, that's OK per PBS rules...I used to do that all the time before the WL hold came into effect.

I'm not clear regarding what happens to your bookshelf and WL (need to read a bit on that to give you a good answer) but if you want a particular book to be posted to you while you're on vacation hold, you can put it on Auto Request.

Yes, yes, and if you put the single book on auto-request, yes - but if you don't have a credit available, you will be skipped in line (though you won't lose your place).

Regarding your second question...here's what it says in the Help Docs:

  • The books that are on your Bookshelf at the time the Hold goes into effect will be hidden from requests.

  • This does not include books that are involved in a Wish List Hold or an active transaction.
  • The FIFO order of each book will be preserved during the Hold; it will not "lose its place in line" to get requested.

I take the second point to mean that you will be moving up in line...because let's say that your book is #10 in line...if book #1 in line is requested, then you will be #9. Now, if you're #10, and the first 9 books are requested, then you will be jumped over for the next request.

It seems something similar happens with the WL...you keep your place in line and move up as other people in front of you get their copies but if you're #1 when the next copy is posted, you will be passed over.

Kati, I have my account on and off vacation hold all the time for the same reason. I have a lot of credits right now so I just put my wishlist on auto-request, which means any books I come up for will be automatically ordered for me.

To be honest, I have never paid much attention to the FIFO for books on my bookshelf...since you can't really see what number you are in line anyway, it's sort of a moot point. Putting them on vacation hold makes the invisible, and I don't know if that means you move up in line or if people leapfrog you, but you don't lose any ground in the line, and that's all I care about. Just do NOT put books on your bookshelf on INDIVIDUAL HOLD as that removes them from the queue and when you unhold them you're at the back of the line!

However, you can hold items on your wishlist individually (or all together on vacation hold) and not lose your spot in line. If you want to be sure to get offered a particular book if it's posted while you are on hold, make sure it's auto-requested, that's all.

I do this all the time for the same reason. Just dont individually hold books on your shelf-you'll lose your place in FIFO.

I just autorequest any WL books I'm near the top for and don't want to be passed over.  Sometimes I'm off hold for a few weeks.  Other times I read several WL books in a row and come off hold just long enough to post them.
