I dunno what they call it.  My rural may be closing, we are 15 miles in one direction and about 20 in the other to next PO.  There are a ton of senior citizens out this way, and my Postmaster said there was a way to have a little business, like country store, and also be a post office.

What is that called and how can i get info?

The historically famous LUM n" ABNER store is still operating not too far from me..........and...........they are still a "contract" post office! Since 1886!

I like to drive over there every so often and mail out stuff from there so people get that postmark. :)

it's called a Village Post office. You might start with the post office's 1-800# for the information  It's 1-800-ASK-USPS

Thank you Brandy!  It would be neat since that would fit in really nicely with my little tiny burg.......we have a tiny little general store that is on the HONOR SYSTEM  i.e., you just put $ in a box if you buy a soda or ice, as well as a fire station.

If the PO gets closed, there is a building I could start a little store in, with a contract PO.

even if you aren't an Official post office, you could resell stamps and such. You have to buy the stamps from USPS and then you resell them to customers. That is what those pack and ship places do. They even mark up the stamps to make a profit.

My Post Office has a sign up now saying what stores in the area sell stamps at the same price as the Post Office.

The problem with the "Village Post Office" is that the mail will still be delivered from the "real" Post Offices, and if someone needs to pick up a package or registered letter, they will have to go to the distant office.  (On the other hand, the people who are likely to have a problem doing that are also the most likely to be home when it is delivered in the first place.)  The "Village Post Offices" do only out-going mail.

Look on the USPS website.  I looked over their info about this same thing over the weekend.  There used to be a great "drugstore" a block from me that had the outgoing postal services in the back of the store, but it's been gone about 16 years now.  I miss it.
