When I went to ship a book yesterday I noticed that it had a 10 word inscription penned inside the front cover.

I sent a PM to the recipient to be sure that's okay, otherwise the book could conceivably be marked RWAP.

They haven't responded to the PM and the shipping deadline is tomorrow.

If there is no response by tomorrow do I ship it anyway or cancel the transaction?  I'm inclined to cancel but would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks.

I don't think an inscription inside the front cover is any different than a signature, and would be acceptable to post. Writing is not allowed on the text pages, with the textbook exception. I think you would have been okay to post it, although the receiver could always disagree.

But once you send the PM to ask, I think you need to either get the permission or cancel. They can re-order from you later if they decide they do want it and it's still in the system.

No use asking, then sending it anyway when you don't hear back.

Inscriptions are not reasons for RWAPs. Even if a receiver mistaking marks a book RWAP, the sender doesn't need to return the credit because of it.

Pages:

  • No torn or chewed/gnawed pages
    • yes, that does say "chewed/gnawed". That means no pet-chewed (or human-chewed) books.
  • No loose or missing text pages
    • for travel guide books - maps if designed to be detachable may be detached, but must be included.
  • Cover not water damaged (there may be no water damage to any part of the book)
  • No writing or highlighting or underlining on text pages
    • a signature or note on the flyleaf or inside front or back cover is OKAY
    • an author's signature on the title page is OKAY
    • writing or highlighting or underlining on the text pages is NOT OKAY
      • Exception: if it is a textbook or workbook, these are expected to have highlighting/underlining/writing
        • if you post a textbook/workbook, the condition must be described to the requestor in a Personal Message
        • AND the described condition MUST BE AGREED TO in a reply PM before the book is sent
        • This is the one of the ONLY three cases in which a PM exchange about a book is required before the book can be sent (the others are for travel guidebooks and cookbooks--see below).

Unfortunately, as Cindy points out, now that you've sent the PM you've given them the opt out for getting the book. How did you word the PM? If you said you would cancel then I think you need to cancel. You do have 2 days after the date to mail to mark it mailed so you may have a little more time to wait on them.

I knew a name was ok, I didn't realize a note was also ok.

I'm sending it even though I PMed and highly doubt there will be an issue.

Thanks for your help.
