Quofum is a strange planet, discovered by a probe, seemingly winking in and out of existence. Finally a small expedition has been put together to explore it, and 4 scientists set out with a small ship of 2 crew members to land on this strange world. Immediately they discover a biota so rich with life and making no evolutionary sense whatsoever that they are both stunned and mystified. And in their explorations they make another mind-blowing discovery.

Alan Dean Foster seems to be cranking out side novels related to his larger plot of a mysterious Evil darkness coming to devour the Commonwealth worlds. This one turns out to be one of those, and disappointingly ends in a rather lackluster manner after the big revelation. The whole plot seems to peter out and go nowhere in particular. Foster is an expert at world-building and his descriptions are fascinating, but this reads like another money-maker to me, despite its being written with his usual skill.
