I put two book up on my bookshelf that are wishlisted by other members. One of them has a large wishlist (over 200) and the other book has a small wishlist(under 10).I thought  that these books would be "snapped up". I am going on vacation in a couple of days for about a week. What happens if they get "requested" before I get back? If I knew that it would take a while for the books to get taken, I would have waited until I was back.

as far as i know, once you post a WL book, you cannot cancel that until someone accepts it.  since each member gets 48 hours to respond, it can take a while, especially if you get more than one person who doesn't respond.

if you won't be able to log in at all while you're gone, then when someone eventually requests the book, it'll sit and wait for the 5 days for you to respond.  if you don't respond, the order will be cancelled and that person will go back on the WL in the same place they were in.  then you can repost the book when you return.  depending on the timing, you might get lucky and still be within the five days when you do return.  if you do have access towards the middle/end of your trip, you can still click the 'i can mail later' when the book is requested by someone and mail it when you get back.  5 days to accept the request and 5 days to mail will get you through a week IF you can check for requests while you're gone.

but yes, next time you might want to wait until later to post WL books if you're on a tight timeframe.

Since you are going out of town, I would put the rest of your account on vacation hold, and put a note in your profile, something like "I am going out of town from X to Y, I will respond to any pending requests and PMs on day Z blah blah" so that if folks get concerned, they'll at least be able to look there and see that you've not dropped your membership, just gone on vacation.

From the Help Center:

  • The books that are on your Bookshelf at the time the Hold goes into effect will be hidden from requests.

  • This does not include books that are involved in a Wish List Hold or an active transaction.
  • The FIFO order of each book will be preserved during the Hold; it will not "lose its place in line" to get requested.
  • Books that are already involved in an active request will not be affected by the Hold.
    • Any book request that was submitted before the Hold went into effect will not be affected by the Hold
    • Any book request you submit at any time (before, during or after the Hold will not be affected by the Hold.
  • This means that all auto-emails associated with an active transaction will be sent to you as usual
    • You will still get auto-emails asking if you have received a book that is en route to you 14 and 21 days and 25 days after the book was marked mailed by the sender.
    • You will still get "second" and "third" notifications for previously-submitted requests to which you have not responded.
    • You will still get auto-email reminders to mark your outgoing books mailed before the deadline if you have not done so.

Cheers,

Catt

Put your shelf on hold. If it times out or gets declined by this person it'll just go on your shelf on hold.  I'd also put a note on your profile page just in case.  Also I bet if you contact PBS they could take it off your shelf for you.

I'm regretting posting a WL book yesterday.  I'm leaving tomorrow night for a house hunting trip.  I was hoping it would get picked up and I could mail it on my way out of town. But it's still sitting there.  My shelf is already on hold.  I'll have computer access so if this person accepts it at the last minute I'll be able to see the request. I'll have to let it sit until the last day before accepting and then choose the last possible mail by date.

Thanks, I didn't think about making a note in my profile.
