If I have requested a hardcover book, I would like to have the dust jacket.  I don't mind if the dust jacket is not in perfect condition (few are on a used book),  small tears or imperfections are fine by me.

PLEASE IGNORE THIS RC if I have reqested a paperback book or audio book of any kind.  Thanks.

Someone recently turned me down for a audio book on CD because of these conditions.  People decline my request on paperbacks, too.  So please tell me how to word it so paperbacks and audio books don't get declined.  Thanks

Some folks clearly don't read beyond the first info, so they only see "must have dust jacket".  Just leave off the part about paperbacks and audiobooks. I also PM senders immediately after ordering if I have a "special request" about condition or edition or something, asking them as clearly as I can to go ahead with the order if blah blah blah, and cancel if not blah blah blah.

Unfortunately, some people cancel orders for reasons that are simply beyond rational understanding, and you just have to go with it, yell at the cat instead, and find another copy.

Technically, your post belongs in the Thoughts section.

Pamela..Seems clear to me. I think some as Greg said don't read thru the entire RC. It only takes a moment to do so. It is a shame...sad

Will you accept a hardcover w/o a dust jacket?

If so:

1. Please send the dustjacket (if available) with hardcover books .

If not:

2. Hardcovers not accepted without a dust jacket.

Not confusing but if I was reading it I'd wonder why you put the following in.

"I don't mind if the dust jacket is not in perfect condition (few are on a used book),  small tears or imperfections are fine by me."

I think this reads clear and easy:

If I have requested a hardcover book, I would like to have the dust jacket.

PLEASE IGNORE THIS RC if I have reqested a paperback book or audio book of any kind.  Thanks.

Maybe try putting the Ignore for paperbacks and audios first and then the dust jacket part.

I would probably just turn the RC off whenever I ordered a non-hardcover book.  Then you wouldn't have to worry about.  Like others said-you will still get turn downs that don't make sense simply because some people turn down all RCS and others will just see the word hardcover and decline.

Also a question like this would get more responses in the Questions forum.

This RC has been evolving.  At first I put the part about Paperbacks and Audio and people STILL declined the swap because it wasn't a hardback.

Cozi,    I added the thing about tears because people were declining because the dust jacket wasn't in perfect condition and had a few small tears.  Believe it or not, this added line has helped to clarify that I don't expect Like New books, just want dust jackets.

I don't usually read the CMT forum.  I do value the opinion of people who read this forum, however.

The Questions about PBS forum is a great place for RC revision.

I have no problem with that request.  I wouldn't have needed the second sentence since paperbacks and audio's don't have dust jackets.

Some senders have decided to simply deny any requests with RCs.  I do not understand what the big deal is for them to do so but I have had many requests denied due to my RCs and they are not complicated.  The reason some give is that I sound like a picky person and I will probably mark it RWAP and they do not want to chance it, that I am looking for a free book.  GIVE ME A BREAK!  I have marked one or two out of over 600+ books rec'd and I bend over backwards to not mark RWAPs.  Then I get the spiel why be so picky when this is a used book swap and I should be glad to get the book as I get it for free.  Also that those with RCs ruin PBS.  BALONEY!

Last I checked, I had to use a credit and pay postage for a book before I can get a book unless I buy a credit, which I have never done and doubt strongly that I ever would.  I feel some of them want to be GOD and decide who gets their precious book.  I have had books denied and then when I reapplied for them removing my RCs, when the book arrives it is in like new condition.  I have started to write a list of those members who do this for future reference.  One of them actually had the nerve to do the above and then order 6 books from me.  I felt like saying, sorry!

I may sound bitter because a book I waited for for over a year was turned down and I got that spiel about pickiness, want a free book, probably want to sell it,  that I need to remember this is a used book swap and that I ruin PBS by having RCs.  She was such a **********************************************.

I got books with very apparent stains, chewed on books, pissed on by animals, broken books with pages falling out once you turn them, ripped pages, broken in half by the spine usually in the middle so I have two separate pieces and downright filthy books on their last legs which I would not even donate.  That is why I have RCs.

I hear your frustration.  Some of my favorite people here decline all RCs.  It is not good for those of us that have RCs but I have come to the "Wadda ya gonna do?sad" place with it all.

I have an RC because hardbacks I received  without a dust cover (4 in a row) were not postable and no one who had mailed them to me would refund the credit after I pointed that out.  So I learned that with-a-dust-cover books are simply better taken care of by the readers.  It has worked so far, except for people with paperbacks requested turning down my request.   It is true that new members rarely read the rules about book conditions.  One gal explained to me that her rules were better..."if the book is readable, it is swappable".  Duct tape and all!  LOL.

Stick with it, though.  There are lots of great books and great people here.

Everyone has a right to have an RC just as everyone has the right to turn down RCs.  Keep in mind that the people who turn down your RCS for what seems like a dumb reason have probably been burned by someone who complained about a perfeclty postable book.  I don't turn down all RCs.  But my postage budget is tight and if I find the RC too demanding, rude or vague-it gets turned down especially if it's a WL book and I know the next person probably won't have an RC.  If I can only afford to send out a few books a month-I don't want to have to worry about getting harrassed for a credit back on a book that meets the sites guidelines.

I've received unpostable books myself and haven't always gotten a credit back. Got 2 of them just last week-got a credit back on one.  I still won't put an RC restating the rules.  I'll take my chances because the bad books are usually few and far between.  The  2 in one week was just bad luck and both are still readable.

This from PBS's book conditions:

"Hardbacks do not need to have their dust jackets to be swapped here, and are worth one credit - the same as paperbacks."

ps:  Everyone has a right to post conditions, of course...I just wanted to note that the club's conditions do not require the dust jacket; a book w/o one IS postable.

Pamela,  I have a dustjacket Requestor Condition also.   To the best of my knowledge, I have never been turned down due to confusion about the RC.    Here is what mine says:

Please note that this condition does not apply to any paperback books.  If I have requested a paperback book or an audiobook from you, please IGNORE this condition and click on "Yes, my book meets the requestor's conditions."

However, if I have requested a hardback book from you, I would prefer that the book have the dustjacket.

Some people will reject a RC request and give some really "off the wall" reasons that have nothing to do with the RC.  My RC states " Please do not send books that have pages that have turned brown and/or smell of mildew".

One person replied:   "Pages are turned down".   My only guess is that it was a typo and the person meant to type "brown" - but I doubt it since the book was published in 2009.   Another person responded "This book has been read alot".   I just accept their explanation and move on.

We wanted to let you know that the book you requested on 6/13/2010 'Prayers for Sale' by Sandra Dallas cannot be mailed because of your Requestor Conditions.

The member who this book was ordered from had this to say....

it is a paperback book, not a hardcover...

This is a typical response for a turned down request.  I know it is a paperback, you dimwit!  I am the one who requested it!   What does dust covers on hardbacks have to do with it?!!!
