I had a request today for books that don't smell.  She has requested to receive a pm before denying her request.

There is a smoker in my home.  I've tried smelling the book and I can't smell anything.  How do I pm here?  There's no pm button, just the condition box.  How can I find out who they are without accepting the request first?  If I accept and cancel, don't I lose my place in FIFO?

No you cannot find out until you accept; yes if you accept and cancel you lose your place in FIFO line (unless, of course, it is a WL book).

If you accept and they don't want it, make them cancel their order. They can then reorder and you can decline the RCs and let them move on to the next in line.

that RC is way too subjective...I'd just deny and be sure and state the reason.

I agree, too subjective and no way to contact them before accepting.  I'd decline right now stating unclear requestor conditions and not worry about it.

I would just decline it, saying there is a smoker in your home. Polite and reasonable, IMO.

i agree - just decline.  if you have a smoker in your home you're probably used to the smell, and those are pretty subjective.

it would be nice to send her a note about her RC - but you can't see who it is without accepting the order.  perhaps she'll get the message after being turned down regularly.

it would be nice to send her a note about her RC  - you do send them a note when you turn down the RC. Whatever you type in the box on why you cannot meet an RC is sent to the requester.

I just got a RC for the book to be " New or nearly new condition". Could someone please tell me what  a nearly new book looks like? These RC from people make me crazy. It is way too subjective. I am amazed that people with RC on their accounts ever receive any books ever.

Don't let it make you crazy Bill - life is simply too short!   I dont' mind most conditions but if it's subjective, I just pass and move on.   It is their right to put whatever they want in the RC - it's my right to pass if I don't understand what they mean.  <shrug>  not worth the trouble to get upset over - for me.

She has requested to receive a pm before denying her request.

I admit I read this thread quckly, so if someone said this already and I"m repeating, I apologize...however!  RCs *are not* supposed to request PMs for clarification!  I tell you, I"ll turn them down for this reason faster even than "like new condition".  I will not PM someone and the Help Center says we shouldn't have to.

From the Help Center:

  • Type your text into the text box:
    • Please be very clear
    • Your conditions should be easily interpretable and should NOT require (or ask for!) further clarification in Personal Messages
      • If a sender is confused, she or he may decline
      • Once a sender has declined, you will not be able to get that copy of the book, even if you remove your Requestor Conditions and re-request it

I'd do what the others said-turn it down and in the remarks suggest she include her name in the conditons if she wants to be PM'd first.  I turn down anything requesting a "like new book only", anything that asks for a PM first or is too subjective.  It's just not worth the trouble.  I'd rather wait until the next requestor.

Personally, since you have a smoker in your home, even though it's not you and there your books-I'd turn down anything with a no smoking, no smoke smell condition.  Even if you can't smell it on the book.  You are exposed somewhat to the smoke smell and therefore don't notice it as much as someone else might.  I know my house doesn't smell like dog to me until I've been gone for a whole day and then I come in and go "whoa-dog smell!"
